FHWA Announces Web Conference on Special Event Traffic Management, 9/11/08

August 27, 2008

This web conference is a follow up to the June 2008 article in ITE Journal, “Real-Time Travel Time Estimates Using Media Access Control Address Matching”. In this article the authors described the basic principle of tracking consumer Bluetooth devices to capture travel time, route choice, and other operational metrics.

Expanding on their existing work, Indiana Department of Transportation extended the technique for event management during the Brickyard 400 NASCAR race. This web conference will be the first opportunity where they are able to share the operational experience and results.

The conference discusses an exceptionally low cost method for agencies of any size to collect travel time and route choice information. The techniques uses are simple and can easily be performed with typical office laptop and software. Operational discipline and programs that can benefits include but not limited to:

-Traveler Information
-Freeway and Arterial Performance Measurement
-Section 1201 compliance
-Planning
-Integrated Corridor Management
-Urban Partnership Agreements

State and Local transportation agencies are welcome and encouraged to participate.

NHI Announces Talking Operations Seminar on August 27, 2008: Transportation Operations for Planned and Unplanned Events

August 18, 2008

This National Highway Institute webcast will describe how both planned and unplanned events require a great deal of preparation and planning to ensure that the execution of the plan works. The difference is that for a planned special event, the planners have the luxury of knowing the date, the expected attendance, and the anticipated effect on the roadway system. With an unplanned event, the planning is often through training, tabletop exercises, and the design of an evacuation plan that can be executed quickly during a time of crisis. Whether it’s a planned or unplanned event, the players and their roles are the same. In addition, the desired outcome is also the same – the safe transport of those involved.

This webcast will examine three aspects of either a planned or unplanned events – the planning, the implementation of the plan and the after action of the event.

I-5 One of Two of Interstates To Get $11 Million for ITS Technology

July 9, 2008

The Federal Highway Administration announced that two of the nation’s busiest interstates will receive $11 million, more than $5 million each, in federal support for innovative strategies to reduce the frustration of truckers looking for parking on congested routes. The two interstates, I-95 and I-5, also were selected under the Corridors of the Future Program, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s national congestion initiative, in September of last year.

The Department chose the East Coast’s I-95 and the West’s I-5 for the Truck Parking Facilities program because of innovative uses of ITS technology to provide truckers with real-time information on available parking. The technology will monitor parking availability and transmit the updates to truckers. Both corridors will explore ways to allow truckers to reserve parking spaces ahead of time. The selection of I-95 and I-5 was based on a corridor-wide approach to addressing congestion along interstates heavily used to transport freight.
